Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Science Assessment Brief

Module Title: GIS and the Spatial Web

Module Code: IS3S665

Assessment Type: Practical Assessment (CW)

Assessment Title: Server-side web mapping (GeoServer)

Weighting: 40%

Word count/duration/equivalent: N/A

Submission Date: 3rd May 2024

Return Date: 24th May 2024

Assessment Description

This coursework requires you to demonstrate your understanding and skills in setting up and delivering serverside aspects of web mapping. All material for marking must be presented via the ces-web2 web server.

Present this component using the URL:
https://ces-web2.southwales.ac.uk/students/STUDENT_NUMBER/is3s665/cw3.html

You are asked to develop web pages that call up and present information that has been configured within your GeoServer account on server ces-gis. GeoServer will, in turn, have been configured to access data that you have loaded and configured on your Postgres/PostGIS database account, also located on server ces-gis.

The specific requirements are:

(a) GeoServer and PostGIS: Create and share at least three web maps from the cesweb2 server. These MUST make use of WMS feeds originating from YOUR OWN GeoServer Account. These MUST in turn be reliant upon data that has been loaded into YOUR OWN Postgres/PostGIS database account.

Data used must include that supplied during the exercises (i.e. the country outline, National Parks, and Areas of Outstanding Beauty of Wales). You may also include data that are drawn from database usw_teaching available to you on ces-gis. Either the “Dental Practices” as covered in the exercises, and/or any other tables of spatial data that are available from that source.

To be awarded high marks (high 2.1 and above) you must also demonstrate the use of your own independently sourced data. This requires sourcing, preparation, and storage: Seek out (and report) your own data sources and document any preparatory tasks undertaken (e.g. editing, generalization, simplification, reclassification, sub-setting based on spatial or attribute values, coordinate re-projection, etc.) prior to their deployment in your web maps.

(b) It is essential to demonstrate the use of GeoServer WMS services, as described above. Additional marks will be reserved for further demonstrating the use of WFS and/or PHP to support your web map pages.

(c) Your server-side data sources are to be presented as maps via web pages held and delivered from your student website (i.e. ces-web2). You may choose any appropriate web mapping API to achieve this objective.

(d) Be aware that marks are also awarded in this final assessment for overall web site design (best practice includes clear navigation, attractive page layout, ease of use, visual appeal), so a final polish-up of your website prior to this submission date is recommended.

(e) As with the previous assessment points, submit through Blackboard a short summary report (2 to 3 sides of A4) to introduce your maps, describe your web mapping application, identify sources of data and preparations applied to them, and any features/coding that you wish to draw particular attention to.

Deliverables:

· Data sets loaded on PostGIS

· WMS feeds configured on GeoServer.

· Maps served from ces-web2 that deomstrate the use of GeoServer WMS feeds (mandatory) and WFS/PHP feeds (optional, but will be rewarded).

· Summary report submitted via Blackboard Assessment page.

Learning Outcomes Assessed

1 To analyse and evaluate the technologies used for the consumption of spatial data resources through front-end web based clients and desktop applications.

2 To analyse the requirements and design an appropriate solution for a specified problem of defined scope using web based mapping technologies.
